A little while ago, while pattern surfing on Ravelry, I happened upon Carl and Carla and was instantly smitten. I had visions of a fall version, probably adult rather than baby. So I went stash diving. I found great oranges, browns, greens and purples in a variety of DK weight cabled yarns–Jaeger Extrafine Merino, Zara, etc. Of course, like all projects that start with stash, I decided I needed more. I called my knitting buddies and raided their stashes. I even augmented my collection of Zara at The Yarn Spot. This is what I ended up with:
I had three sliiightly different purples so I decided that all the centers would be purple and that I would try for that most ellusive of all designs–random. Here is where I was after a few days:
I couldn’t stop knitting. I wanted to see how the next color would look. And which shade of purple to use? It was also looking like it might be a warm, crunchy shawl. But if that was going to happen I would need to play with the shape a little. The ends? Yeah, well, there are a lot of those. I try to deal with them every third or fourth square. Otherwise, it would be a stringy mess. I have worried about putting green next to green or orange next to orange but think it just adds to the randomness. Right?
I’ll continue the story of my Carl and Carla next time. And I need to come up with a name for my version–Charlotte?
